Forgiving Ancestors, Making Room for Peace
Symbolic AI-created illustration, not a depiction of actual ancestors.

A detailed article based on Hitesh Chhabra’s original video. This series combines traditional shraddha and tarpan with remembrance, prayer and inward reflection.

After gratitude, pain also deserves a place

Not every ancestral memory is comforting. A face may bring love and fear at the same time. A relationship may have offered more responsibility than support. Words spoken to a child may continue to echo within the adult for years.

The remembrance and gratitude of the first two days were not meant to erase this truth. Day 3 also belongs to the person who wants to show respect but arrives carrying hurt. After acknowledging the relationship and its gifts, Hitesh turns toward wounds that remain unresolved.

Forgiveness does not require calling harmful behavior right. It asks a different question: is the pain of what happened still directing my relationships, reactions and sense of worth? How do I want to respond to that influence now?

Early responsibilities and the child still carrying them

Hitesh brings his own childhood into the discussion: losing his mother young, an unsettled home affected by his father’s drinking, and responsibility toward a younger brother. Cooking, household work and schooling existed alongside demands far beyond a child’s age.

A child in such circumstances may learn more than practical tasks. They may learn to suppress a need, anticipate someone else’s mood or manage without asking for help. The passage of time does not automatically settle the emotional meaning of those experiences.

The personal example is not a measure against which another person’s pain should be judged. It offers a way to see the experience compassionately. The younger self who lived through those days deserves understanding; present relationships do not have to be governed entirely by that earlier fear.

The sculptor and the stone: retain learning, not the wound

The video uses the image of a sculptor working with stone. From the chisel’s blows, a form emerges. Difficult circumstances can likewise be followed by self-reliance, patience and a deeper understanding of people. Hitesh asks what strengths he can recognize within his own experience.

The metaphor should not be used to justify hurting a child or to claim that suffering is necessary for growth. Retaining a useful learning and excusing injustice are different things. We can acknowledge that an experience was painful, recognize capacities developed afterward, and decide not to pass the pain onward.

A practical expression of forgiveness appears in that decision: not speaking to a child in the same humiliating voice once used toward us, and not normalizing neglect for another person. Inner reflection becomes meaningful when an old cycle stops with a new choice.

Today’s video & guided practice

Use the video for the complete guided commentary. It explains the progression from remembrance and the offering toward forgiveness and the visualization of light. The article summarizes that intention instead of transcribing the meditation word for word.

Working compassionately with one relationship at a time

The day begins with acknowledgment and the traditional offering. Attention then turns toward an ancestor associated with hurt. Rather than opening every relationship and every incident at once, the guidance works with individual relationships so the intention remains clear.

In the practice, Supreme Soul Shiva is remembered as a source of peace, purity and happiness. Light is visualized reaching the practitioner and then the ancestor. With a wish to forgive, attention turns toward a peaceful, lighter and luminous image of that person.

If the word forgiveness does not yet feel honest, do not force it. A first step may simply be acknowledging pain and a willingness to move toward peace. Healthy boundaries and present-day safety do not contradict this inward practice.

Which memory do we strengthen after the practice?

After the practice, repeatedly replaying the hurtful scene may place pain at the center again. The video asks the practitioner to return instead to the peaceful, luminous image held during the guidance. This does not deny an event; it changes the direction of attention.

Charitable service and kindness to living beings may accompany the practice. The video closes with a voluntary invitation to share devotional material about Supreme Soul Shiva. This is an additional form of service, not a compulsory condition for forgiveness or the offering.

Day 3 does not promise to rewrite a past relationship. It invites a gradual change in how that relationship lives within us now. Compassion extends both toward the ancestor and toward the child we once were.

Ritual & intention

Preparation and the daily offering

The following summarizes the procedure taught in this video series. Consult your family priest for your shraddha tithi, additional rites and family-specific traditions.

  1. Bathe and wear freshly washed inner and outer clothes. Prepare a clean place and a seat for yourself, remaining mindful of physical comfort.
  2. Place a small stool or low table covered with a clean cloth before you. The videos suggest a height slightly above the knees when seated. Use available ancestral photographs; having a picture of every ancestor is not required.
  3. This series specifies a metal lamp with pure desi ghee rather than oil, with brass preferred. Keep the flame safely placed and never leave it unattended.
  4. Prepare a shallow plate, a vessel of clean water and a small quantity of black sesame seeds. Acknowledge known and unknown ancestors from both lineages and establish the intention of service.
  5. Respectfully offer water into the plate while repeating “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” at least three times. Offer the sesame seeds into the water with the same mantra. Its intended meaning is a respectful salutation to one’s revered ancestors.
  6. Continue with today’s particular intention and guided practice. Treat the water respectfully afterward; the series describes placing water for birds or, where appropriate, offering it at tulsi or a tree’s roots.

The inward intention for today

Remember one ancestor, acknowledge your experience honestly, and hold a wish for peace for yourself and that soul in the light of Supreme Soul Shiva. Do not force an experience. The intention is to make room for compassion rather than repeatedly rehearse pain.

Carry the intention into your day

Interrupt one familiar reaction today. Pause where a harsh response would normally appear. Offer another person some of the respect or patience you once needed yourself.

Reflect & understand

Insights and questions for this day

Does forgiveness excuse harmful behavior?

No. You can acknowledge what happened and its consequences while working with the burden it leaves. Forgiveness is not approval of harm or an instruction to abandon safety.

What if I cannot forgive yet?

Do not turn difficulty forgiving into another accusation against yourself. Naming the experience, responding compassionately and accepting support can be meaningful first steps.

What does the sculptor metaphor mean here?

It invites recognition of strengths developed after difficulty. It does not make the harm necessary or right. Retain the learning without repeating the behavior that caused pain.

Should I work on every relationship at once?

One relationship at a time may offer greater clarity. Proceed at a pace you can manage. It is appropriate to pause and seek support if the experience becomes overwhelming.

What if the old memory returns afterward?

Do not fight yourself for remembering. Gently return to the present and the intention of peace. Change need not mean that every memory disappears after one practice.

What can change for the next generation?

Do not pass hurt onward as normal family behavior. Respectful speech, listening to emotions and apologizing for mistakes are concrete beginnings of a different inheritance.
