Pitru Paksh Seva Day 1: Reconnecting Through Remembrance

Before the flame, we remember more than a photograph. We remember the long human journey that made our own life possible. The first day begins with a simple acknowledgment: because they were here, we are here today.

Reconnecting Through Remembrance
Symbolic AI-created illustration, not a depiction of actual ancestors.

A detailed article based on Hitesh Chhabra’s original video. This series combines traditional shraddha and tarpan with remembrance, prayer and inward reflection.

Our story did not begin with us

When we describe ourselves, we often begin with our education, effort and achievements. Yet another story came before those things. Someone built a home, held a family together through uncertainty or made room for a generation they would never fully know. Their names may have faded; their contribution has not disappeared.

Hitesh Chhabra begins this series by widening remembrance beyond a single familiar face. Both the paternal and maternal lineages belong within it. Known and unknown ancestors, those whose photographs survive and those whose names are lost, are included in the same respectful acknowledgment.

Within this spiritual practice, pitru rin is approached as a responsibility arising from what we have received. The offering is not meant to be a frightened transaction. It becomes meaningful when the person making it recognizes a relationship and willingly brings attention, gratitude and service to it.

The inner attitude matters alongside the ritual

The first day asks for more than a sequence completed in the morning. A lamp may be lit and water offered, yet the inner part of the practice is easily lost if the rest of the day passes in noise and distraction. Returning briefly to remembrance throughout the day keeps the intention alive.

Hitesh uses a familiar household example: after a bereavement, people often lower the television or radio without being told. The point is sensitivity, not compulsory sadness. A serious attitude here means calm attention and respect, not anger, depression or withdrawal from ordinary responsibilities.

Simplicity is explained in the same practical way. Hygiene and clothing required for work are different from unnecessary display. Someone who must wear a suit at the office does not need to abandon that responsibility. The purpose is to support a thoughtful state of mind, not create arguments over appearances.

Simplicity in food, conduct and daily rhythm

For this series, the video recommends avoiding intoxicants, meat and eggs, keeping meals simple and reducing onion, garlic and very hot spices. These are presented as the spiritual discipline of this practice. A calm, devotional atmosphere while preparing food is part of the same intention.

A morning bath and freshly washed clothes prepare the practitioner to sit with care. New purchases are unnecessary; cleanliness is the emphasis. Hitesh specifically mentions both inner and outer garments rather than treating the visible appearance alone as sufficient.

The suggested practice after four in the morning belongs to the routine described in this series. It should not be confused with a universal rule for calculating shraddha tithis. A family priest can advise on the timing and additional observances followed in your own tradition.

Today’s video & guided practice

The first video brings remembrance and the offering together. Preparation begins at 15:08; guided ancestral remembrance begins around 20:39. Understand the setup first, then sit with the video at a comfortable pace.

Whom do we include in remembrance?

A familiar photograph can help the mind settle into remembrance, but the absence of an image does not exclude anyone. You can respectfully include the known and unknown ancestors of both parents without needing to reconstruct an entire family tree first.

The video also acknowledges spiritual teachers and benevolent guidance within the wider story of a person’s growth. The emphasis is on recognizing relationships rather than reducing remembrance to the small part of the past we happen to know.

If attention wanders, return to one thought: the stream of life was flowing before me, and today I am honoring that stream. This acknowledgment prepares the ground for gratitude, forgiveness and the deeper work that follows in the series.

Ritual & intention

Preparation and the daily offering

The following summarizes the procedure taught in this video series. Consult your family priest for your shraddha tithi, additional rites and family-specific traditions.

  1. Bathe and wear freshly washed inner and outer clothes. Prepare a clean place and a seat for yourself, remaining mindful of physical comfort.
  2. Place a small stool or low table covered with a clean cloth before you. The videos suggest a height slightly above the knees when seated. Use available ancestral photographs; having a picture of every ancestor is not required.
  3. This series specifies a metal lamp with pure desi ghee rather than oil, with brass preferred. Keep the flame safely placed and never leave it unattended.
  4. Prepare a shallow plate, a vessel of clean water and a small quantity of black sesame seeds. Acknowledge known and unknown ancestors from both lineages and establish the intention of service.
  5. Respectfully offer water into the plate while repeating “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” at least three times. Offer the sesame seeds into the water with the same mantra. Its intended meaning is a respectful salutation to one’s revered ancestors.
  6. Continue with today’s particular intention and guided practice. Treat the water respectfully afterward; the series describes placing water for birds or, where appropriate, offering it at tulsi or a tree’s roots.

The inward intention for today

Rest attention gently on the lamp and acknowledge both lineages. Recognize the life, identity and opportunity you have received. Hold a sincere intention for the peace and onward journey of known and unknown ancestors. The video contains the complete guidance; this article offers its meaning rather than a word-for-word script.

Carry the intention into your day

Whenever the day allows, pause briefly in remembrance. Mentally repeat “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” and return to the intention of service. Patience and respect toward living family members are also ways of putting that intention into practice.

Reflect & understand

Insights and questions for this day

Can I remember ancestors without photographs?

Yes. The practice includes known and unknown ancestors. A photograph supports attention; it is not a condition of belonging. Both lineages can be remembered even when names and images are unavailable.

Is remembrance limited to the father’s lineage?

No. Both maternal and paternal lineages are acknowledged. The practice recognizes that your life arose through both families, not only the surname you carry.

Does simplicity mean remaining sad?

No. Calm seriousness is not the same as holding on to sadness. Ordinary responsibilities continue; unnecessary noise and display are reduced to make space for thoughtful remembrance.

Is completing the ritual all that matters?

The procedure matters, but the video also emphasizes intention. Acknowledgment while making the offering, and remembrance during the day, give the outward action personal meaning.

Do I need new clothes or an expensive setup?

No. Washed clothes, a clean space and a respectful arrangement using available resources are sufficient for the preparation described. Expenditure is not the center of the practice.

What is the first day’s central learning?

Do not measure your story only through personal achievement. Recognizing the life and opportunity received from earlier generations begins both gratitude and responsibility.
