Pitru Paksh Seva Day 13: Peace After Sudden Loss

After a sudden departure, the mind may keep returning to the final event. Today, remember your loved ones through the fullness of their lives, love and dignity—with traditional tarpan and a prayer for peace in the remembrance of Mahakal.

Pitru Paksh Seva Day 13: beyond the final event

Sometimes a single piece of news divides life into before and after. A sudden departure gives us no time to prepare. Alongside memories of the person, the mind may return to the final event, the words left unsaid and the ache of “if only”.

On the thirteenth day of Pitru Paksha Seva, Hitesh Chhabra remembers ancestors whose departure was sudden or unexpected. The prayer is for their peace and onward journey, with an invitation to remember more than the circumstances of their death.

Their life was larger than its final moment. It held affection, effort, laughter, relationships and many small acts of goodness. Today, make room for that whole life.

Remember the person without replaying the event

At approximately 10:44, and again after the meditation, Hitesh asks listeners not to repeatedly bring up what happened or how the person died. Acknowledge that the departure was sudden, then turn towards respect and a wish for peace.

The video’s written description also emphasises remembering the person’s life, qualities and love. A familiar habit, a time they helped you or something good they taught you can become the centre of remembrance.

If a difficult memory arises on its own, do not add blame. The invitation is to avoid deliberately replaying the event during this practice; it is not a demand to suppress grief or tears.

Let faith support compassion, without adding fear

Hitesh describes, from his spiritual perspective, the confusion a soul may experience after a sudden departure and its onward journey. The invocation of Mahakal belongs to this devotional understanding.

This should not be treated as proof of a particular departed person’s condition or as a definite explanation for problems at home. Today’s service centres on compassion, gratitude and goodwill. It does not require blaming yourself or your family’s grief for someone else’s unrest.

Give their whole life a place in your memory

A simple question for today is: which of their qualities can I carry into my own behaviour? Their generosity, sense of responsibility, care for family or willingness to listen may live on through small choices.

If a long meditation feels difficult, sit quietly for a little while, remember their name with respect and offer a simple good wish. A particular experience, or an immediate feeling of relief, is not a measure of love.

Honour both lineages, known and unknown

Although sudden loss is today’s particular theme, the practice begins with gratitude to all ancestors. Remember both your maternal and paternal lineages.

Offer respect to those whose names, faces or photographs are known. Include those whose stories you do not know. Our knowledge may be limited; our goodwill need not be.

Listen, understand and practise

The recording begins with preparation, gratitude to ancestors and tarpan, followed by a guided Mahakal meditation for those who departed suddenly. From approximately 20:15, Hitesh shares advance preparation for the following day’s food offering; this is separate from today’s meditation.

Prepare for the seva: lamp, water and black sesame

Preparation begins at approximately 3:58. If the lamp is already burning, sit before it. If it has not yet been lit, Hitesh says it can be lit when you practise. In this recording, a delayed start is not presented as a reason to abandon the service.

  1. Bathe, wear clean clothes and prepare a clean cloth for your seat.
  2. Cover a stool or small platform with a clean cloth. The video places this a little above knee level when seated. Set out available photographs of ancestors.
  3. Keep a ghee lamp, a tray or large plate, clean water in a vessel or glass, and a small quantity of black sesame seeds ready.
  4. Light the lamp in a stable, safe place and bring your attention to the practice.

This summarises the practice in the original recording. Follow trusted guidance within your own tradition for family-specific shraddha procedures and dates.

Begin with respect and gratitude

From approximately 6:17, the prayer introduces the practitioner by name and offers respect to the ancestors. It acknowledges the body, breath and life received through the meeting of both family lineages.

Hitesh speaks of recognising ancestral indebtedness, or pitru rin, and making a sincere effort to serve within one’s capacity. Gratitude can also find expression beyond these few minutes, through responsibility and goodwill in daily life.

The recording repeats the following mantra three times in homage:

Om Pitru Devataya Namah

The tarpan sequence: water, then sesame

At approximately 9:06, water is offered from the vessel or glass into the tray while “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” is recited three times. Black sesame seeds are then placed in the water. Hitesh gives the option of repeating the mantra three times with this offering as well.

Next, join your hands and remember those who departed suddenly. Hold known faces with respect and include unknown ancestors in the prayer. Keep the focus on a wish for peace rather than retelling the circumstances of the departure.

Remembering Mahakal: a prayer for peace and courage

From approximately 11:33, Hitesh invokes Supreme Soul Shiva in the form of Mahakal. The devotional sense of refuge beyond time and death becomes the centre of the meditation.

The invocation calls upon Baba Mahakal to become present. Listeners are guided to imagine red light spreading, with ancestors standing in reverence before that divine presence.

Within the meditation, this radiance symbolises the easing of fear, confusion and bonds. Receive it as prayer and guided imagery; seeing a particular scene is not a requirement.

The guided meditation: radiance and free, shining stars

In the recording, Mahakal’s radiance is imagined as a brilliant red sun. Within that light, bodily identification and limiting bonds are envisioned dissolving. The spiritual belief in a perishable body and an imperishable soul supports a prayer for the onward journey.

At approximately 17:22 comes the intention “Sarva bandhan mukta bhava”—may you be free from all bonds. Ancestors are then imagined as pure, radiant stars moving forward in light.

Listen with the pauses and pace of the original recording. Light, stars and liberation belong to the language of this spiritual meditation; they are not guarantees of an external outcome.

Closing with courage and tenderness in daily life

The final part of the meditation turns towards courage and responsible conduct in the living person. While life is here, fulfil your responsibilities and practise steadiness through the remembrance of Mahakal.

At approximately 19:34, the practice closes with “Om Namah Shivaya” and homage to Mahakal. Listen to the video for pronunciation and the complete sequence.

Choose one modest action for the day: listen carefully to a relative, help someone in need or put a loved one’s good quality into practice. The written video description also connects remembrance with compassion and service.

Preparation for the next day: four food portions

This is advance guidance for Day 14, not an additional step in the Day 13 meditation. From approximately 20:15, Hitesh discusses the following day of this series, Sarva Pitru Amavasya. Do not treat the recording’s calendar date as a fixed date for every year.

Prepare sattvic food within your capacity, with enough to share. Examples in the video include halwa-puri, kheer, rice and khichdi. First offer bhog to the ancestors; the food that has been offered is then divided into four portions:

  1. For the family and other people: mix one portion back into the prepared food, to be eaten by the family and shared. Hitesh also encourages feeding people in need.
  2. For a cow: the second portion. He connects this with maternal care, gentleness and peace.
  3. For birds: the third portion, with particular mention of crows. He associates this with the onward journey and a good future.
  4. For a dog: the fourth portion. He explains the traditional symbolism of guardians and gatekeepers, with a wish for an unhindered journey.

These are not four types of animals: one portion returns to food for people, and three are for a cow, birds and a dog. Offer food appropriate for the animals. The symbolic meanings are Hitesh’s spiritual interpretation.

Today’s intention

You may carry the day’s theme in these adapted words:

I remember you through the love and dignity of your whole life, beyond the final event. I pray for your peace. With tenderness towards my own grief, I give your memory a place in compassion and good actions.

Remembrance does not always need to return to the most painful moment. Sometimes it can be a quiet bow and one small act of goodness in the life that continues.

Questions and reflection

The particular focus is on ancestors and departed family members whose death was sudden or unexpected. The daily prayer also includes known and unknown ancestors from both maternal and paternal lineages.

No. Hitesh asks listeners to remember the person respectfully and wish them peace without repeatedly bringing up the event. Do not blame yourself for memories or tears that arise spontaneously.

Clean clothes and a seat, a cloth-covered platform with available ancestor photographs, a ghee lamp, a tray, clean water and black sesame seeds. This describes the recording; family traditions may differ.

The recording uses “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” three times while offering water. Hitesh also gives the option of repeating it three times when offering sesame seeds.

They are devotional symbols of moving from fear and bonds towards peace and the onward journey. This is guided imagery, not proof of a departed person’s condition.

In this video, Hitesh says to sit before a lamp already burning, or light it later when practising. A delayed start is not presented as a reason to abandon the seva.

The instructions near the end are advance preparation for Day 14 in this series. One portion of the offered food returns to food for people; the other portions are for a cow, birds and a dog.

Respect your own pace. Sitting quietly, remembering the person with dignity and offering a simple good wish are possible ways to engage. Do not use a particular feeling as the measure of your love or service.

An important note for readers

This is an edited presentation of the original video and its description. The soul’s journey, Mahakal’s radiance and liberation are expressed through spiritual belief and meditative imagery. They are not promises of external outcomes, protection from death or mental-health treatment.
