Pitru Paksh Seva Day 6: Changing Inherited Family Patterns

“That is simply how our family is.” Sometimes the phrase describes tradition; sometimes it makes old hurt seem normal. Day 6 is not about blaming our inheritance. It is about recognizing patterns and choosing a different response.

Changing Inherited Family Patterns
Symbolic AI-created illustration, not a depiction of actual ancestors.

A detailed article based on Hitesh Chhabra’s original video. This series combines traditional shraddha and tarpan with remembrance, prayer and inward reflection.

Family identity and recurring behavior

Families pass down strengths, but not every learned behavior serves us well. Explosive anger may be praised as strength. Suppressing emotion may be confused with good upbringing. Interrupting or dismissing someone may become so familiar that nobody names it as a problem.

Hitesh asks viewers to recognize these inherited patterns. “It has happened in our family for generations” describes a history; it does not establish that the behavior is right. Recognition is the first step toward changing it.

The spiritual framework of this series remembers peace, purity, love, strength and wisdom as qualities of the soul. The practice holds ourselves and the lineage in those qualities while retaining responsibility for our present responses.

Anger, silence and withholding affection

The first group of examples concerns the emotional climate at home. One is a family taking pride in the anger of its men while its pressure falls on women or children. Calling anger normal does not remove the fear it creates.

Another is repeatedly silencing emotion. A person accustomed to “keep quiet” may withdraw before expressing a need. The video uses poisonous food as a metaphor for unexpressed feeling; it is an illustration of the inner experience, not a medical account of disease.

A third pattern is withholding affection in the name of discipline. Belonging becomes strained when it must constantly be earned by performing in an approved way. Discipline can coexist with respect and space for safe expression.

Criticism, comparison and control

Constant fault-finding is the fourth pattern. If every achievement is followed only by another deficiency, effort itself may never feel sufficient. The fifth is comparing children, turning one person’s success into another person’s inadequacy.

The sixth is control presented as “for your own good.” The seventh is fear-based parenting, in which mistakes become threats rather than opportunities to learn. Concern may lie behind both, but independent thought can be suppressed in their name.

Do not use the examples only to judge the previous generation. Notice which reactions appear in your own speech today. Once a pattern is recognized, a small alternative response becomes possible.

Today’s video & guided practice

The original video discusses ten recurring behaviors before guiding the offering and remembrance of Shiva as Mahakal. Hear the context before choosing the focus of your practice.

Scarcity, refusing to apologize and normalizing addiction

The eighth pattern is a persistent scarcity mindset: resources may increase, yet the feeling of never having enough remains. Sensible saving and continual fear are not the same thing.

The ninth is treating an apology as a loss of status. If being an elder means never admitting a mistake, children learn defensiveness instead of responsibility. The tenth example is the normalization of addictive behavior within a family.

Addiction should not be reduced to a defect of character or a spiritual failure. Changing the situation may require practical and professional support. The useful commitment here is not blame, but refusing to treat a harmful recurring pattern as inevitable.

A renewed intention in meditation, a new response in life

After the traditional offering, the practitioner acknowledges that some inherited reactions also operate within them. The intention is not to accuse the ancestors, but to establish a different pattern for oneself and the next generation.

The meditation remembers Supreme Soul Shiva in the Mahakal form. It uses the image of a red sun and the soul as a point of light at the forehead, with light extending through the lineage. Wishes for strength, peace, happiness and freedom from bonds form the center of the practice.

If harsh speech, comparison and control continue unchanged afterward, the practical work remains incomplete. Choosing one pattern is a sufficient beginning: recognize it, decide on a cue to pause and rehearse a different response. Let change become a living expression of respect for the lineage.

Ritual & intention

Preparation and the daily offering

The following summarizes the procedure taught in this video series. Consult your family priest for your shraddha tithi, additional rites and family-specific traditions.

  1. Bathe and wear freshly washed inner and outer clothes. Prepare a clean place and a seat for yourself, remaining mindful of physical comfort.
  2. Place a small stool or low table covered with a clean cloth before you. The videos suggest a height slightly above the knees when seated. Use available ancestral photographs; having a picture of every ancestor is not required.
  3. This series specifies a metal lamp with pure desi ghee rather than oil, with brass preferred. Keep the flame safely placed and never leave it unattended.
  4. Prepare a shallow plate, a vessel of clean water and a small quantity of black sesame seeds. Acknowledge known and unknown ancestors from both lineages and establish the intention of service.
  5. Respectfully offer water into the plate while repeating “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” at least three times. Offer the sesame seeds into the water with the same mantra. Its intended meaning is a respectful salutation to one’s revered ancestors.
  6. Continue with today’s particular intention and guided practice. Treat the water respectfully afterward; the series describes placing water for birds or, where appropriate, offering it at tulsi or a tree’s roots.

The inward intention for today

Visualize the lineage behind you. Hold wishes for strength, peace, happiness and freedom for yourself and all of them. Connect the visualization with one practical commitment: which harmful pattern will I work to stop passing onward?

Carry the intention into your day

Work on one pattern today: appreciate a person’s own effort instead of comparing, pause instead of reacting, or apologize clearly instead of becoming defensive. Repetition gives a small change the chance to become a new habit.

Reflect & understand

Insights and questions for this day

Does every problem come from ancestors?

No. The reflection concerns learned, repeated family behaviors. Present circumstances, experiences and choices also matter. It should not become a single explanation for every difficulty.

Can an established pattern change?

Recognition creates room for practice. Change does not demand immediate perfection; it involves choosing a new response repeatedly, noticing mistakes and accepting help when needed.

How can I reflect without blaming my family?

Name the behavior rather than declaring a person bad. Describing the impact of comparison is different from an accusation about someone’s entire character. Focus also on what you can change.

Must I change all ten patterns in one day?

No. Begin with the clearest recurring pattern. Consistently practicing one real change may be more useful than making a large but vague promise.

Why pair meditation with behavior change?

A wish for peace becomes visible in speech and response. Inward practice provides a direction; everyday actions give that direction practical form.

What gift can we offer the next generation?

A home where feelings can be heard, mistakes acknowledged and respect does not depend on fear. A constructive inheritance is transmitted through example, not instruction alone.
