Pitru Paksh Seva Day 2: Gratitude for Our Ancestral Gifts

Inheritance is not only what arrived in our name on paper. It may be the courage to rebuild after loss or the instinct to feed a guest as generously as ourselves. On Day 2, we ask: which gifts have reached us through our ancestors?

Gratitude for Our Ancestral Gifts
Symbolic AI-created illustration, not a depiction of actual ancestors.

A detailed article based on Hitesh Chhabra’s original video. This series combines traditional shraddha and tarpan with remembrance, prayer and inward reflection.

Inheritance is larger than property

Day 1 acknowledged a relationship. Day 2 makes that acknowledgment personal: what, exactly, have I received? A home, business or financial inheritance may come to mind first. Stopping there leaves much of the inheritance unseen.

Our body, breath, family identity, practical skills and ways of meeting difficulty also belong in the picture. Gratitude deepens when a general thank-you becomes recognition of a specific gift.

Hitesh illustrates this through his own family. These accounts do not present an uncomplicated or perfect family history. They show how valuable qualities can travel through generations even when that history contains considerable hardship.

A child of eight, and the courage to sustain a family

In the video, Hitesh recalls that his grandfather was about eight at Partition. The family came to India, his father had died, and younger siblings needed support. At an age when a child usually looks for protection, circumstances were asking him to become a source of support himself.

Beginning with a fruit cart, he helped sustain the family, supported siblings and gradually built a home and livelihood. Gratitude in this account is not only for accumulated property. It is for a willingness to carry responsibility that gave later generations a foundation.

The account also includes fires and serious losses in the fruit business. What had been built could disappear, yet work began again. Hitesh recognizes resilience in that inheritance: the ability to make something from the resources that remain.

The inheritance of service: offering others equal care

His maternal grandfather represents another kind of wealth. Guests and people receiving food in service were not offered something inferior to what the family ate. Good food was shared with equal care. Hospitality mattered more than keeping a running account of generosity.

That quality can reappear as hospitality in a later generation. Smaller practical gifts matter too: growing up around the fruit business taught the family how to recognize good produce. Inheritance may be a broad philosophy or an everyday skill we barely notice.

Look for two or three such examples in your own life. Whose patience do you recognize in yourself? Who taught you to work honestly or feed someone who was hungry? Naming a quality makes gratitude more vivid than repeating a general expression of thanks.

Today’s video & guided practice

Do not turn service into a family dispute

The second video also answers questions raised after Day 1. The willingness to serve need not wait for one designated family member. Both parents’ lineages can be remembered, and ancestors connected through marriage may be included according to the practitioner’s relationships.

Physical limitations or disagreements at home should not turn devotion into conflict. Mental prayer, goodwill and service remain possible. The video mentions a traditional precaution within this practice about handling ritual materials during menstruation, while retaining inward remembrance and prayer. This is not a medical statement of impurity or a universal religious rule.

In response to a question about rebirth, Hitesh explains his spiritual understanding that not every soul is immediately reborn and that subtle relational accounts may continue. The practical emphasis is to retain goodwill rather than lose the purpose of the practice in speculation or argument.

Let gratitude become useful service

Giving in an ancestor’s name can mean more than handing something over and leaving. Hitesh discusses support for hospitals, children’s education and people in need. The underlying question is whether service offers meaningful support and, where possible, helps someone become more capable.

Compassion toward animals extends the same attitude. The video asks viewers not to overlook bulls while caring for cows. Providing clean water and food suitable for the animal is a practical expression of noticing needs that are easily ignored.

One way to complete today’s gratitude is to choose an inherited virtue and use it for someone living. Let the patience, generosity or courage you received become useful through you.

Ritual & intention

Preparation and the daily offering

The following summarizes the procedure taught in this video series. Consult your family priest for your shraddha tithi, additional rites and family-specific traditions.

  1. Bathe and wear freshly washed inner and outer clothes. Prepare a clean place and a seat for yourself, remaining mindful of physical comfort.
  2. Place a small stool or low table covered with a clean cloth before you. The videos suggest a height slightly above the knees when seated. Use available ancestral photographs; having a picture of every ancestor is not required.
  3. This series specifies a metal lamp with pure desi ghee rather than oil, with brass preferred. Keep the flame safely placed and never leave it unattended.
  4. Prepare a shallow plate, a vessel of clean water and a small quantity of black sesame seeds. Acknowledge known and unknown ancestors from both lineages and establish the intention of service.
  5. Respectfully offer water into the plate while repeating “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” at least three times. Offer the sesame seeds into the water with the same mantra. Its intended meaning is a respectful salutation to one’s revered ancestors.
  6. Continue with today’s particular intention and guided practice. Treat the water respectfully afterward; the series describes placing water for birds or, where appropriate, offering it at tulsi or a tree’s roots.

The inward intention for today

Remember several specific gifts as you acknowledge your ancestors: life, virtues, identity, skills and the capacity to rebuild, not only possessions. Thank them for those gifts and hold a wish for their peace and well-being wherever they may be.

Carry the intention into your day

Put one inherited virtue into action today. Help without keeping score, offer someone food with dignity or look for a constructive path through difficulty. Connect gratitude with a concrete act.

Reflect & understand

Insights and questions for this day

What if I inherited no property?

Inheritance includes more than assets. Life, identity, a work ethic or a lesson in standing by others may be genuine gifts. Name what is true in your experience rather than inventing an idealized past.

Can gratitude coexist with a difficult family history?

Recognizing a gift does not erase suffering. Support and hurt can exist within the same family. Today attends to what was received; later days make room for the pain as well.

Why name specific gifts?

A specific memory connects gratitude to lived experience. Remembering how someone taught patience carries more personal meaning than a phrase repeated without attention.

What if my family does not participate?

Do not turn the practice into pressure or argument. Continue your own remembrance, inward prayer and useful service calmly. Gratitude does not require forcing others to participate.

What makes a donation meaningful?

Notice the actual need. Food, education, care or resources are most useful when offered with dignity and, where possible, in ways that increase a person’s ability to support themselves.

How do I carry Day 2 forward?

Choose one inherited virtue and pass its benefit to another person. In this way a valuable family legacy continues through conduct, not remembrance alone.

An important note for readers

This article is an edited presentation of Hitesh Chhabra’s spiritual teaching and original video. Descriptions of souls, ancestral debt, energy and subtle journeys belong to a faith-based spiritual framework, not scientific findings, individual diagnoses or guaranteed outcomes.

Traditional shraddha and tarpan are part of this service; consult your family priest about your customary rites. These practices do not replace qualified care for grief, trauma, mental health or addiction-related difficulties. Pause and seek appropriate support if distress increases.
