Pitru Paksha Day 10: Love Without Attachment

Missing someone who has died is natural. Their words, shared moments and place in our lives remain meaningful. Within that remembrance, however, another question can arise: am I wishing for my loved one’s wellbeing, or asking them to return and remain exactly as they were for me?

Pitru Paksha Day 10 explores love without attachment. Affection can remain while the insistence on holding someone back gradually softens. Remembrance can continue without becoming a relationship made entirely of demands. Alongside goodwill for our ancestors, we accept responsibility for the life still before us.

Based on Hitesh Chhabra’s original Hindi video, this article brings together traditional tarpan, reflection and remembrance of Supreme Soul Shiva.

Where does love differ from attachment?

Attachment says: remain beside me in the form in which I knew you. Relate to me as I wish. Never leave me.

Pure love says: what we shared matters deeply. My affection and memories remain, but your journey does not exist only to fulfil my expectations. Wherever you are, may you be happy and move forward.

Within Hitesh’s spiritual framework, each soul has its own journey. We meet in different relationships, fulfil our roles and continue onward. Today’s reflection asks us to honour a bond while allowing that independence.

This is not an instruction to become indifferent or erase someone from memory. It is an invitation to make room for their wellbeing within our affection.

Parenting: from control to guidance

Hitesh explains this distinction through the relationship between parents and children. A young child cannot make many decisions independently, so parents provide care and direction. As the child grows, the relationship also needs to develop.

Instead of retaining control over every choice, parents can gradually become guides. Sharing experience, offering caution and providing support still matter. So does allowing a growing child to learn responsibility for decisions and their consequences.

When love becomes a demand for constant obedience, strain develops. The same example raises a question in ancestral remembrance: am I offering goodwill, or trying to keep someone within the limits of my wishes?

Giving grief a direction of goodwill

“Why did you leave me?” “How will I manage?” “If only things had happened differently.” Such thoughts can arise after a death. This practice invites us to recognise them gently and, in our own time, give them a different direction.

We may feel angry with a loved one, almost as if their death were a betrayal. The video asks us to consider whether leaving was within their control.

Hitesh describes repeated demands to return as a pull on a soul’s onward journey and discusses this through his belief in reincarnation. These are spiritual interpretations, not established explanations for a child’s illness or emotional state. The purpose of reflection is not to blame yourself for grieving.

A gentler intention might be: I feel your absence and acknowledge that pain. At the same time, I wish you peace and wellbeing wherever you may be.

The meaning behind a family custom

Hitesh mentions a custom in his family of eating pickle at the meal associated with the fourth-day or thirteenth-day rites. He interprets its sourness as a symbol of loosening the hold of a former bodily relationship. This is the family interpretation he describes, not a rule for every household.

The useful reflective point is that accepting a farewell can also be part of love. You do not have to be harsh toward a loved one’s memory. Gratitude and remembrance can coexist with a wish for their onward journey.

Listen, understand and practise

Listen to the complete video before beginning so that the distinction between love and attachment has context. After the traditional offering, the first inward practice turns complaint and the wish to hold on into goodwill. A second practice examines the habit of continually asking ancestors to meet our needs.

Preparation and traditional tarpan

The following summarises the method taught in this video. Consult your family priest for your family’s shraddha tithi, customary rites and additional observances.

  1. Bathe in clean water and wear clean inner and outer clothing. Prepare a clean place and a seat for yourself.
  2. Cover a small stool or platform with a clean cloth and place available ancestral photographs on it. In this teaching, the platform is slightly above the knees when seated, as an expression of respect.
  3. Prepare a metal lamp, desi ghee and a cotton wick. Hitesh specifies a ghee lamp for this service rather than an oil lamp. Keep the flame in a safe place.
  4. Keep a shallow tray with raised edges, a vessel of clean water and a small bowl of black sesame seeds ready.
  5. Light the lamp and honour known and unknown ancestors from both maternal and paternal lineages. Express gratitude for the life received through them and resolve to offer service within your capacity.
  6. Offer water into the tray while repeating “Om Pitru Devataya Namah,” as recited in the video. Then offer a little black sesame while repeating the same invocation.
  7. Continue into Day 10’s reflection and prayer.

Om Pitru Devataya Namah

Hitesh explains its intention as bowing respectfully to one’s revered ancestors. In this practice, he associates water with movement and sesame with fulfilment. These are the spiritual meanings he gives the offerings.

First practice: from holding on to loving freely

Bring to mind a departed loved one toward whom you repeatedly feel complaint, anger or a wish for their return. Recognise what you feel without forcing it away.

An edited rendering of the original intention:

Dear ancestral soul, our relationship remains precious to me. I gradually release the complaint I have carried about your leaving. Your journey is yours, and mine is mine. Wherever you are, may you be happy. I release my insistence that you remain for my expectations. I will make room for your memory with love and gratitude.

The video then invokes Supreme Soul Shiva as the Ocean of Happiness. In the guided imagery, a radiant sun appears, and the light of happiness and fullness reaches both the practitioner and the ancestors held in remembrance.

Acknowledge the emptiness you may feel and draw spiritual support from remembrance of Shiva. The aim is not to erase your loved one. It is to remember them through a cherished memory and a wish for wellbeing, rather than only through complaint.

The habit of continually asking ancestors for more

A second theme is the habit of making demands. Hitesh uses the Hindi expression “bhikharipan ka sanskar” for this mindset. Here it concerns repeatedly seeking fulfilment from others, not a person’s financial circumstances.

After lighting a lamp, does the whole prayer become a list of requests? Arrange this for me, remove that difficulty, protect the house and fields. If remembrance serves only our convenience, concern for the ancestors’ own wellbeing is pushed aside.

Respect for blessings and transferring all responsibility to someone else are different things. Today’s invitation is to take responsibility for our choices, actions and effort, and to become capable of giving.

What does the lamp’s light remind us of?

In the video, the lamp represents remembrance of the luminous nature of the soul and the Supreme Soul. From this perspective, lighting it is a prayer for the ancestors’ spiritual wellbeing. Using it only to present demands changes the direction of that service.

Pause before the lamp and ask: am I here only to receive, or am I also willing to contribute?

The wish to keep ancestors bound to our needs

The video criticises beliefs and practices in which a departed ancestor is assigned continuing responsibility for a house, field or statue in order to provide protection and benefits. Hitesh’s central point is to wish for an ancestor’s wellbeing rather than desire to retain them for personal advantage.

He compares this to a guest whose visit has ended. If we refuse to let a guest leave because we still want something from them, can that be called hospitality or love?

The video also mentions breaking an installation or immersing an image when ending such an arrangement. This article does not present those actions as general instructions. Discuss any family religious object or installation with the family and a trusted priest, and choose a safe, environmentally responsible approach. The inward practice here is to release self-serving expectations.

A viewer’s comment concerning Gaya is also discussed, but its intended meaning had not been clarified. It should not be used to draw a definite conclusion about that family or about Gaya’s traditions.

Second practice: from demands to responsibility and service

Remember known and unknown ancestors and consider whether you have placed the whole burden of your life upon them. Notice the habit without demeaning yourself.

An edited rendering of the original intention:

Dear ancestors, I seek forgiveness for expecting you only to fulfil my needs. I will make sincere efforts in my life and take responsibility, drawing strength from remembrance of Bholenath. You are not bound to my demands. May your journey be peaceful and may you be well.

Connect this intention to action. Choose one practical step toward something for which you have only been asking. Receiving appropriate help is not wrong; the change concerns repeatedly avoiding your own responsibility.

Receive strength from Shiva and put it into service

The video does not end with a prayer to fill our own emptiness. Hitesh asks us to receive strength from Bholenath so that we can give more to nature, other people and living beings. We have received much from life; service offers an opportunity to contribute in return.

In his spiritual interpretation, serving Shiva means becoming an instrument in work that benefits others. Today’s resolve can be small and concrete: listen patiently, help someone in need, or take up a family responsibility previously left to others.

Let love remain, let the grip of demands soften, and let goodwill for ancestors be accompanied by sincere effort and service in our own lives. This is the heart of Pitru Paksha Day 10.

Day 10 and the context of Indira Ekadashi

The series plan associates 6 October 2026 with Indira Ekadashi and Ekadashi Shraddha. These daily meditation themes form a guided spiritual programme, rather than a mandatory scriptural ritual for each tithi. Consult your local calendar and family tradition for observance.

Questions and reflection

No. You can remember them through gratitude, a cherished memory and goodwill. The intention is to soften the demand that they return, not erase the relationship from memory.

Grief after a loss is natural. This article does not blame you for grieving. Practise at your own pace and seek appropriate support when the loss feels difficult to bear.

It is a faith-based prayer and reflective practice. It makes no definite claim about a departed soul’s present condition or a guaranteed outcome.

The video honours known and unknown ancestors from both maternal and paternal lineages. You do not need every ancestor’s name or photograph.

Yes. The video teaches preparation, a ghee lamp, and offerings of water and black sesame. The article summarises that method; seek family guidance for the appropriate shraddha tithi and customary rites.

The 14-day plan places Day 10 on 6 October 2026 in the context of Indira Ekadashi and Ekadashi Shraddha. The video focuses on love, attachment and service; it is not a fasting manual. Confirm local observance through your panchang and tradition.

The meditation and reflection described here do not depend on fasting. If you observe an Ekadashi fast, follow your tradition and individual health guidance.

Write down a good memory, recognise one expectation you wish to release, and take a practical step toward one of your own responsibilities. Close with a compassionate act within your capacity.

An important note for readers

This article is an edited presentation of the original video. Descriptions of souls, reincarnation, subtle bonds and divine energy belong to Hitesh Chhabra’s spiritual interpretation; they are not diagnoses or promises of a particular outcome. Grief is natural. This practice does not replace necessary medical or mental-health support. Seek a trusted family priest’s guidance for customary shraddha rites.
