PITRU PAKSHA SEVA · DAY 11 · HITESH CHHABRA
Remember those who gave your life direction. Honour ancestors, teachers and spiritual guides by allowing the wisdom you received to shape your choices and service.
Original video: 7 October 2026 · Hindi guidance: 38:48
AI-created symbolic illustration; not a depiction of real teachers or ancestors.
An edited article based on Hitesh Chhabra’s original Day 11 video. Read, reflect and practise at your own pace.
Looking back over a life, we remember more than family faces. There may be a teacher who restored our confidence in learning, a mentor who changed our perspective in a difficult season, or someone whose words finally helped a familiar idea make sense.
On the eleventh day of Pitru Paksha Seva, Hitesh Chhabra turns toward gratitude for this inheritance of wisdom. Service to ancestors continues. Alongside it, we remember the teachers and spiritual guides who brought understanding, direction and inspiration into our lives and into the lives of earlier generations.
Today’s question is not only who taught me something. It is also how much of that teaching can be seen in the way I live. A respectful gesture before a lamp can lead to a meaningful action after we stand up. That is where this reflection takes us.
We receive life through our parents and ancestors. Yet people outside our bloodline also help shape our journey. Hitesh describes these relationships through his spiritual understanding of a soul family and souls who support one another.
Within that understanding, a guru’s connection is not limited to physical life. He also speaks of guidance from departed teachers. These descriptions belong to his spiritual perspective. An everyday aspect is easier to recognise: after a teacher has died, something they taught us may still influence a decision we make.
Today’s remembrance can therefore include our own teachers, our parents’ teachers and guides within our lineage whose names we do not know. A useful understanding may have passed through several generations before reaching us.
We sometimes dismiss a lesson because we already know it. But knowing an idea and embodying it are different experiences. It is easy to agree that patience matters; remaining patient during a difficult conversation takes practice.
Hitesh explains that a teacher’s words can give fresh strength to something familiar. For him, this is more than receiving information. It is an experience of inspiration and blessing. A guru helps bring direction, clarity and a more considered way of seeing a situation.
Choose one teaching you accept but often forget to practise. Remembering its source can become an invitation to return to it. Gratitude then has somewhere practical to go.
Guru, in this service, is not restricted to a spiritual leader from one institution. Hitesh remembers his birth mother and the other mother figures who nurtured him. He speaks of the mother as the first teacher and expresses gratitude for the care and understanding received.
Schoolteachers, mentors at work and people who helped us find our feet also belong in this reflection. One person shared knowledge, another taught discipline, and someone else recognised a possibility we could not yet see in ourselves.
There is no need to search only for celebrated names. Someone whose timely words helped change the direction of your life is also worthy of remembrance.
Hitesh recalls his school principal, Chand Singh. After attending a private school until Class 7, he entered a government school in Class 8. In his account, frequent fights and a troubled environment drew his attention away from studying.
He remembers a new principal introducing strict discipline. His recollection includes scolding and physical punishment, and he says he had returned to studying seriously by the following year. This is his personal account of that period, not a recommendation to use physical punishment with children.
The most tender part of the story comes later. After progressing in life, Hitesh wanted to meet his principal again. By then, his teacher had died. He describes the sadness of never having that opportunity to express his gratitude in person.
The story brings a question back to our own lives: have I acknowledged the person whose guidance helped me? For someone who has died, remembrance can take the form of practising a good lesson they left with us. For someone still here, we can recognise their contribution today.
The full guidance moves through the meaning of guru gratitude, remembrance of ancestors and teachers, guided contemplation, Hitesh’s personal recollections and finally tarpan. The steps below follow that sequence. Listen to the original Hindi recording for the recitation and pace of the practice.
This is a summary of the method taught in the video. Seek your trusted family priest’s guidance for your family’s shraddha customs and tithi.
The preparation expresses cleanliness, respect and attention. An unavailable photograph or additional lamp need not prevent you from expressing gratitude.
Honour known and unknown ancestors from both the maternal and paternal lineages. Remember those whose names and faces are familiar, and those about whom you know little. Acknowledge the meeting of both lineages through which your life became possible.
An edited rendering of the intention in the original guidance:
Dear ancestors, I received life through you. I bow to you with gratitude. Within my capacity, I will make a sincere effort to serve you with devotion. Please accept this offering of remembrance.
The video then repeats “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” three times. Hitesh explains the intention as bowing to one’s revered ancestors. He describes the ghee lamp as a spiritual symbol of affection, goodwill and a loving connection.
If available, light the second ghee lamp for your teachers. Bring to mind the faces of teachers, mentors and spiritual guides. Include those who brought understanding into the lives of your family and ancestors.
An edited intention based on the original prayer:
Dear teachers and guides, you gave us knowledge, direction and a path of service. You helped our understanding grow. I am grateful for the learning and spiritual inspiration our family received through you. I will try to give your good teachings a place in my life.
In the recording, attention is brought to the lamp and the guru invocation is recited three times:
Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu,
Gurur Devo Maheshwarah;
Guruh Sakshat Param Brahma,
Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah.
Listen from approximately 16:40 for the recitation and pacing. The invocation expresses reverence toward the teacher through the divine imagery of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara.
From approximately 18:00, the video enters a guided inner scene. Imagine a luminous place where the ancestral souls of your lineage are gathered. You stand before them with folded hands. As the teachers are remembered, the ancestors also bow respectfully.
The imagery includes teachers, spiritual guides, revered women and mother guides appearing above, with blessings reaching the whole family lineage. Wisdom that had been forgotten is remembered again. The practice imagines a renewed understanding where there had been entanglement.
At its centre is the thought that relationships can be precious while each soul still has its own journey. Offer goodwill for your ancestors’ onward movement. Allow space within yourself for clarity and for a gentler hold on expectations. Conclude by bowing in gratitude to the guides.
This is guided spiritual imagery. You do not need to see a vivid picture or produce a particular sensation. Remember as comfortably as you can; neither a feeling of lightness nor a soul’s liberation should be treated as a guaranteed outcome.
After the contemplation, Hitesh explains the guru invocation through ordinary life. A teacher can bring a new beginning through understanding, which he compares with Brahma. Continuing guidance nurtures that beginning, which he compares with Vishnu. Through the image of Maheshwara, he considers transformation during upheaval.
There are times when difficulty makes it feel as though everything is ending. In his interpretation, a teacher’s guidance can help us steady ourselves, allowing a painful situation to become an opportunity for learning and change.
Hitesh remembers Supreme Soul Shiva as his highest guru. He also speaks of Brahma, BapDada and the teachings received through spiritual discourses known as murlis, connecting his own journey of service with that guidance. This is an account of his personal spiritual path. Readers can reflect through their own faith and tradition.
At approximately 33:45, Hitesh returns to tarpan. Keep the tray and clean water ready. Take water in the hand and offer it into the tray, repeating “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” three times as in the recording. Then offer a little black sesame while repeating the same invocation.
Today, the intention accompanying the water is goodwill for the ancestors’ onward journey. Hitesh connects the movement of water and the teachers’ spiritual strength with that journey. These are the devotional meanings he gives the offering.
He then makes an explicit clarification: remembrance need not be limited to departed gurus. Teachers who are still living can also be held in gratitude. Remembering living teachers and offering tarpan for ancestors are distinct aspects of this service.
The final part of the video brings the practice into the rest of the day. Listening to a teaching is one step. Considering where it belongs in our lives is another. Hitesh calls this churning or reflecting deeply on knowledge.
His questions extend from personal wellbeing to loved ones, society, the country and the wider world. How can the understanding we received be put to use? Reflection becomes useful when it reveals a small, clear possibility for action.
When you have a quiet moment today, choose one teaching. Who helped you understand it? In which situation do you forget it? What could you do differently next time? These are reflection prompts prepared for this article, rather than a word-for-word passage from the video.
A lesson in patience might become the decision to hear someone out. A lesson in service might become helping another person learn or understand something. Even a modest action can keep received wisdom alive.
Let gratitude to teachers extend beyond a special day. Keep three things together: remembrance of their contribution, reflection on what they taught, and an action shaped by that understanding.
I will remember with respect those who gave me direction. I will reflect on the wisdom I received and try to express one good teaching in the way I act today.
We give thanks for life received through ancestors and for direction received through teachers. In Pitru Paksha Seva Day 11, that gratitude continues through understanding, responsibility and service.
Alongside daily ancestral remembrance, Day 11 gives special attention to teachers and the inheritance of wisdom. It includes guru gratitude, an invocation, guided contemplation and reflection on putting a teaching into practice.
No. Hitesh explicitly says to use a second ghee lamp for teachers if one is available. The service can continue with one lamp if it is not.
No. The video includes teachers, mentors, mothers and the guides of earlier generations. Toward the end, Hitesh also explicitly includes teachers who are still living.
Use photographs if available. Remembrance can centre on a name, a face or a teaching received. The service includes respect for known and unknown ancestors.
Yes. The ancestral prayer in the video honours known and unknown ancestors from both maternal and paternal lineages.
In this recording, the lamps, ancestral prayer, guru remembrance and reflection come first. Water and then black sesame are offered from approximately 33:45.
Do not put pressure on yourself to create an image or a particular experience. You can remember with gratitude and reflect at your own pace. This article makes no promise of a specific spiritual result.
Choose a lesson and identify a behaviour through which it can be expressed. Pause after listening, reflect on its relevance and decide on one small, clear action.
This article is an edited presentation of the original video. Descriptions of soul families, guru blessings, subtle guidance and spiritual liberation belong to Hitesh Chhabra’s spiritual perspective; they are not promises of a particular outcome.
