The meaning of Pitru Paksh Seva Day 14: a grateful farewell

The last day of a journey gives us a moment to look back. During these days, we have remembered our ancestors, reflected on difficult relationships and considered the responsibility we carry in our own behaviour. Today gathers those intentions into one quiet act of gratitude.

Hitesh Chhabra describes this fourteenth episode as the completion of Pitru Paksha Seva 2026. On Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the prayer includes all known and unknown ancestors. The final farewell holds a loving wish for their onward journey.

The series ends here, while gratitude can continue in the way we live. Fourteen is the sequence of this video series; it should not be treated as a fixed count for every year’s calendar.

Because you were, I am

At about 10:41, the prayer begins with one’s own name and a loving acknowledgement of the family’s ancestors. Both the maternal and paternal lineages are remembered. Their meeting made this life possible.

Bow to those whose names and faces are familiar, and include those whose stories you do not know. The reflection gives thanks for the body, breath and opportunity to act in the world.

It then turns gratitude into a commitment: to offer sincere effort according to one’s understanding, strength and capacity. The emphasis is on bringing an honest heart to the service we can offer.

Let forgiveness become a change in behaviour

The prayer acknowledges both hurt received within the family and mistakes of one’s own. Hitesh invites listeners to accept what they have learnt, release old grievances and ask forgiveness for the pain they have caused.

At around 15:03, this becomes a concrete promise: I will not repeat those hurtful actions with another member of my family. The past cannot be rewritten, but our response today and our conduct tomorrow remain places where effort is possible.

Move towards forgiveness at your own pace. A painful memory returning does not mean that you have failed. After this part of the prayer, the recording repeats the ancestral salutation three times:

Om Pitru Devataya Namah

Bless unfinished dreams and preserve the good inheritance

From about 16:24, the prayer turns to ancestors whose hopes remained unfulfilled. Within his spiritual understanding of rebirth, Hitesh wishes them a healthy body, loving relationships and favourable circumstances on their onward journey.

The next commitment concerns family habits that cause suffering: not allowing those patterns to return through our own behaviour. Alongside this is gratitude for the good inheritance—discipline, generosity, mutual support and the ability to share happiness.

Choose one quality you would like to carry forward. Speaking with respect or fulfilling a responsibility with care can give that inheritance a practical place in daily life.

Include mothers, elders, teachers and departed loved ones

From about 19:48, special gratitude is offered to the women in the ancestral line whose work, sacrifice and care often received little acknowledgement. The prayer then promises care for living parents and elders: offering time, support and comfort wherever one can.

At about 22:18, the reflection turns from attachment towards a wish for the loved one’s well-being wherever they may be. This loving farewell need not become a reason to blame yourself for tears or grief.

Children who died young and loved ones who departed suddenly are also remembered. Gurus are welcomed as part of the spiritual family. In the meditation, strength and blessings received from Paramatma Shiva are imagined reaching these souls through the teachers. This is a devotional prayer, rather than evidence about any particular person’s spiritual condition.

Listen, understand and practise

Listen to the complete 43-minute recording for the sequence and pauses. Preparation begins around 1:34, the combined prayer at 10:31, Shiva-Parvati meditation at 25:46, tarpan at 30:36 and food distribution at 34:54. The closing minutes welcome a return to the joys of daily life.

Prepare the seat, lamp and covered food offering

The recording asks the practitioner to bathe and wear clean clothing. At about 8:54, bathing again before sitting is also mentioned. Arrange the materials beforehand so that the prayer can proceed without searching for things.

  • Prepare a clean cloth or seat for yourself, and a stool or low table covered with a clean cloth for the ancestors. In the seated position, Hitesh describes this surface as higher than the knees.
  • Place available ancestral photographs there and light a ghee lamp on a stable, safe surface. Ghee is specifically prescribed in this practice.
  • Keep the tarpan plate on your right, with clean water in a lota or glass and a small bowl of black sesame seeds.
  • Today also includes a separate food-offering tray. Use clean bowls and cover the whole tray with a clean cloth, preferably white.

Satvik food and a compassionate approach to fasting

From about 2:02, the suggested satvik foods include khichdi, halwa-puri, kheer and potato curry. Prepare what is manageable for you. The food reserved for the ancestors is kept untouched until it has been offered. Other family members may prepare separate food if they need to eat earlier.

For the person performing the daily seva, Hitesh suggests waiting to eat until the offering has been made. Drinking water is explicitly permitted. At about 3:51 and 5:16, he allows light food as needed in circumstances such as a medical condition or pregnancy, and says this is not a rigid rule.

This describes the religious practice in the recording, not personal health advice. Do not postpone your health-care needs for the fast. Sincere service includes an honest understanding of your capacity.

Understand the recording’s time window in context

From about 6:49, Hitesh suggests arranging the seat around 11:40 a.m., ready to light the lamp and begin prayer at 11:45 a.m. The recording gives 11:45 a.m. to noon as the window for the ancestral food offering. It describes the remaining work, including charity and feeding living beings, continuing into the afternoon.

These are the instructions given for the day of this recording. They should not be applied automatically to every city, year or later viewing. Check a trusted local calendar and the guidance of your own family tradition for the relevant date and place.

There is no need to compress your reading of the entire meditation into fifteen minutes. Listen to the whole sequence first; the clock-time mentioned in the introduction and the duration of the recording are different things.

Offer the meal in remembrance of Shiva and Parvati

From about 25:46, the meditation invokes Paramatma Shiva and then imagines a realm of white light resembling Kailash. Mahadev and Mother Parvati are present, with the gurus in the front row and all known and unknown ancestors assembled for blessings.

In the meditation, offer the prepared tray to Shiva and Parvati. Around 27:53, Hitesh invokes the Ardhanarishvara form. Through this divine grace, imagine the same meal appearing before every ancestor. They receive it with deep fulfilment and gradually become peaceful and ready for their onward journey.

The imagery then becomes a celestial stream and a shower of nectar. Follow the pauses in the original recording. These are images within guided devotional meditation; a particular vision or immediate sensation is not required.

The final tarpan: water, sesame and a peaceful farewell

From about 30:36, lift the water vessel with the right hand, with a light touch of the left hand as demonstrated, and pour the water into the tarpan plate. The intention repeated during this final offering is:

Gati sadgati praapt ho—may you progress peacefully on your onward journey.

As the water is offered, imagine the ancestors moving forward within a stream of peace. At around 32:06, a few black sesame seeds follow the water offering. The space is imagined filling with fulfilment, contentment and completion.

The blessing associated with Ardhanarishvara includes the wish to become a servant of the world and a contributor to its well-being. Slowly bring your attention back to your body and surroundings. The farewell also holds a commitment to service in the life that continues.

The four portions of the offered food

At about 34:54, after the meditation, the offered food is divided into four portions. The recording gives this sequence:

  1. For the family and shared meal: mix a small portion into the food prepared in the kitchen. This can be served to the family and shared through charity or a community meal.
  2. For a cow: offer the next portion to a cow. Hitesh connects this with maternal tenderness, gentleness and love.
  3. For birds: place the next portion where birds visit and the food will not go to waste. Crows are specifically mentioned; the devotional explanation connects this with wishes for future fulfilment and nourishment.
  4. For a dog: offer the final portion to a dog. Hitesh relates this to the traditional symbolism of Kshetrapal, the guardian, and a prayer for an unhindered onward journey.

A black dog is mentioned around 39:42, but Hitesh clearly says this is not compulsory. Do not turn the colour into an anxious requirement. Offer food suitable for the animal, in a clean and safe place; a person who cares for the animal can guide you.

The division is one portion for human meals and three for other living beings. The spiritual meanings attached to these offerings are Hitesh’s faith-based interpretation.

The service is complete; return to the joys of life

From about 41:30, Hitesh speaks of eating after the food service and continuing any community meal or distribution. The recording then closes with a gentle invitation.

In the practice described in this series, once the seva and shraddha are complete, the earlier restrictions around purchases or worldly celebrations need not continue until the following day. He welcomes a return to ordinary, joyful living. Understand this within the practice he has taught, while respecting any different context in your own family tradition.

Returning to joy does not erase remembrance. Keep the qualities you appreciated and the changes you promised alive in your relationships. Listening to an elder, speaking gently and sharing a meal are also ways to let service continue.

A final intention for the fourteen-day journey

You may carry today’s reflection in these edited words:

To my known and unknown ancestors, I offer gratitude for the life I have received. I will learn from my mistakes and work to change the behaviour that causes pain. I will preserve the good you passed on, honour living elders and wish you peace. I offer a loving farewell and continue my own life with responsibility, service and joy.

This is the fourteenth and final article of Pitru Paksha Seva 2026. Choose one insight from the series and turn it into a small daily action. That is a simple way to carry the learning of this journey forward.

Questions and reflection

Yes. Hitesh calls this recording the fourteenth and final episode of Pitru Paksha Seva 2026. This is the series sequence, not a fixed calendar count for every year.

Yes. Both maternal and paternal lineages, known and unknown, are included. Gurus, children who died young and loved ones who departed suddenly are also remembered.

The suggestion is for the person performing the seva. Water is allowed, and the recording includes exceptions for circumstances such as medical conditions and pregnancy. Other family members can eat separately prepared food; the reserved offering is not eaten before it is offered.

No. It is the time given for the day of the original recording. Seek reliable local guidance for your own place, date and year.

After the food-offering visualization with Shiva and Parvati, water is offered first, followed by black sesame seeds. The water offering repeats the intention “Gati sadgati praapt ho.” Listen to the video for the complete sequence.

One portion is mixed into the family and shared meal. The remaining portions are offered in order to a cow, birds and a dog. Use food suitable for each animal.

No. Hitesh mentions a black dog but explicitly says this is not mandatory and discourages anxious insistence on the colour.

According to the recording’s closing guidance, ordinary joys can resume once the seva and shraddha are complete, without necessarily waiting until the next day. Read this within the context of the practice taught in this series.

An important note for readers

This is an edited presentation of the complete original video. Descriptions of the soul’s journey, blessings and divine light belong to spiritual faith and guided meditation. They are not guarantees of an external result or personal medical advice. Keep the context of your family tradition when considering dates and ritual practice.
