Pitru Paksh Seva Day 8: Honouring Mothers and Female Ancestors

A family’s story is not made only of names, property and achievements. Behind it lives the care of mothers whose countless efforts often remain unseen. Day 8 is an invitation to recognise that contribution, express gratitude and pray for the freedom and peace of the women in our lineage.

Hitesh Chhabra · Spiritual reflection & service

A symbolic tribute of gratitude to mothers and female ancestors
Symbolic AI-created illustration, not a depiction of actual ancestors.

A detailed article based on Hitesh Chhabra’s original video. This series combines traditional shraddha and tarpan with remembrance, prayer and inward reflection.

Recognising the love we learned to take for granted

When something new arrives in a home, the person who bought it is easily remembered. But how often do we separately acknowledge the hands that prepared meals, understood a child’s needs, cared for an ageing relative and repaired a strained conversation? Hitesh Chhabra begins Day 8 with this question.

He draws attention to a familiar family arrangement: income and public achievements are visible, while a woman’s nurturing and emotional labour are treated as ordinary household duties. Raising a child is already a full-time responsibility. Add cooking, cleaning, elder care, hospitality and maintaining relationships with both sides of a family, and one person is carrying several roles at once.

During a financial crisis, that same woman may also become an earner. Hitesh remembers a difficult period when his wife began nail-art work to contribute. Today’s gratitude is not reserved for one spectacular sacrifice. It is also for the small, repeated acts that kept a household moving but were never recorded as achievements.

Honour the sacrifice without making suffering an ideal

In the video, Hitesh speaks of mothers who placed their dreams, careers or comforts behind the needs of their children. Some remained in deeply painful relationships because they feared what separation might mean for their children’s future. Understanding the weight they carried is an important part of this day’s remembrance.

He also makes a clear distinction: he does not encourage enduring abuse. Recognising the contribution of women who lived through such circumstances is different from expecting women today to repeat that suffering. A tribute does not justify the injustice. It acknowledges that their pain and effort have not gone unseen.

Across generations, a family name may have continued while the individual names of the women who sustained it faded from memory. Day 8 places a light on that overlooked space: Mother, whether or not anyone acknowledged your contribution, I want to recognise it now.

The many mothers who entered a motherless child’s life

For Hitesh, this is not only a philosophical discussion. His mother died when he was seven and his younger brother was just two. He remembers her struggles and her wish to keep a protective shelter over her children. The life she gave him and the love of those early years form the first part of his gratitude.

His grandmother then cared for the boys. After her death, his younger paternal aunt took on a maternal role. He recalls a family account from the hospital: his aunt held his mother’s hand and assured her that the children would be cared for. The two women had also been classmates. In the family’s recollection, his mother closed her eyes peacefully after receiving that assurance.

Hitesh identifies something very simple yet profound in this relationship: his aunt did not let the word “mother” disappear from his life. Alongside her own two children, she accepted the two brothers. Their relationship may have had complicated chapters, but he still calls her Mummy. Gratitude does not require declaring a relationship flawless. It asks us not to erase what that person genuinely gave.

Today’s video & guided practice

The original video is in Hindi. First listen to the explanation and personal memories, then pause to note the women who supported you and what they gave. Continue into the prayer for the women of your lineage and the guided meditation with Supreme Soul Shiva. The complete video opens below in a new tab.

Motherhood is not confined to birth or age

He next remembers his teachers. In the care of teachers such as Anju Borkar and another teacher named Anju, he experienced a maternal concern within the appropriate teacher student relationship. Asking about his studies, noticing difficulties at home, offering extra help and making time for him were small actions with a large meaning: someone cared about how this child was managing.

He also describes the natural mother son warmth he shares with his mother-in-law, and the guidance offered by his friend Sameer’s mother. From help with mathematics to learning how to carry himself in society, these women nourished different parts of his life. After losing his birth mother, he continued to encounter maternal care through many relationships.

The viewer is therefore invited to pause, take a pen and paper, and remember what different women contributed. A wife, sister, sister-in-law, aunt or teacher may belong in that reflection. There is no need to literally address every woman as Mother; the important change is inward respect. Appreciating living women and praying for departed female ancestors are related, but distinct, parts of the practice.

A commitment to see every woman with respect

The remembrance also extends to spiritual inspiration. Hitesh speaks about the maternal strength that organises service, holds many responsibilities together and keeps people connected. For him, nurturing is visible not only within a home but also in society and spiritual work.

He describes an inward spiritual experience at the Hinglaj Mata temple during a service visit to Pushkar. In that experience, he felt reminded of a commitment to recognise the Mother with respect in every woman, whatever her age. He connects this with a promise from a previous life, while openly acknowledging that living the attitude fully still requires ongoing effort.

That acknowledgement brings the account back to everyday responsibility. A promise is not fulfilled merely by speaking it; our way of seeing and behaving must gradually change. Recognising a woman’s contribution, refusing to belittle her effort and holding her dignity in mind are practical steps in that direction.

Make room for women from both sides of the lineage

Today’s prayer is not limited to the mothers whose photographs stand before us. Countless women belonged to both the paternal and maternal lines. We may not know their names or recognise their faces, yet our present existence would not have taken this form without their lives. Remembrance begins by including the known and the unknown.

Hitesh also speaks of married women who remember the ancestors of both their birth family and their marital family. Their circle of remembrance may therefore include the lineages of their mother, father, mother-in-law and father-in-law. This can be understood as a widening circle of care, not a demand to shoulder an impossible burden. The opening commitment remains service according to one’s capacity.

Bring to mind women who set aside comfort or opportunity to support a family. Offer the recognition that your story would not have been the same without their effort. The intention is not to bind them again to family anxiety, but to honour them while wishing them peace and freedom.

Gratitude to Mother Earth, Bharat Mata and Gau Mata

The prayer then widens to three larger expressions of motherhood. Mother Earth carries life and gives us a place to exist. Through this remembrance, Hitesh invites us to consider our gratitude and responsibility toward the earth from which we continually receive.

In saluting Bharat Mata, he expresses love for cultural inheritance, spiritual learning, diversity and shared life. Remembering the motherland is not only an expression of pride; it also raises a question of service. What can we improve in our conduct and contribution toward the land that has given us a home and an inheritance?

Gau Mata is then remembered for maternal gentleness, nourishment and contribution to traditional rural life and agriculture. The shared intention of these three salutations is to stop seeing what sustains us merely as something to use. Gratitude should also be expressed through respect and care.

Meditation with Supreme Soul Shiva: from thorns to flowers

The guided meditation invokes Supreme Soul Shiva in the loving spirit of Babulnath. Hitesh offers the image of life’s thorns becoming flowers. Those thorns symbolise remembered hurt, unspoken pain and feelings held within. With the women of the lineage present in remembrance, the practitioner offers a prayer for love and strength.

The meditation invites the participant to visualise divine light reaching these mothers. Long-held pain is gradually released, happiness awakens and their forms fill with light. Images of dark smoke dissolving into a great sun and thorns becoming blossoms are part of this guided spiritual visualisation of release.

The closing intention is “Sarva bandhan mukta bhava” may you be free from every bondage. Freedom and strength are wished for ancestors who may have taken another birth, as well as those understood to remain in subtle attachments. May possessive attachment become pure love: this is the concluding movement of the practice. Rather than rushing through it as written instructions, listen with the original video. Hitesh also allows the practice to be revisited during the day, as convenient.

Ritual & intention

Preparation and the daily offering

The following summarizes the procedure taught in this video series. Consult your family priest for your shraddha tithi, additional rites and family-specific traditions.

  1. Bathe and wear freshly washed inner and outer clothes. Prepare a clean place and a seat for yourself, remaining mindful of physical comfort.
  2. Place a small stool or low table covered with a clean cloth before you. The videos suggest a height slightly above the knees when seated. Use available ancestral photographs; having a picture of every ancestor is not required.
  3. This series specifies a metal lamp with pure desi ghee rather than oil, with brass preferred. Keep the flame safely placed and never leave it unattended.
  4. Prepare a shallow plate, a vessel of clean water and a small quantity of black sesame seeds. Acknowledge known and unknown ancestors from both lineages and establish the intention of service.
  5. Respectfully offer water into the plate while repeating “Om Pitru Devataya Namah” at least three times. Offer the sesame seeds into the water with the same mantra. Its intended meaning is a respectful salutation to one’s revered ancestors.
  6. After tarpan, pause the video to remember the mothers and what they contributed. Then continue with today’s prayer and guided meditation. This day’s video does not give a separate water-disposal procedure; follow guidance for your family’s tradition.

The inward intention for today

Express the intention simply: I recognise your love, labour and sacrifice. Whether or not others acknowledged your contribution, I wish to remember it. Within my capacity, I will serve with a prayer for your happiness, peace and freedom. This is a paraphrase of the prayer’s intention, not a compulsory word-for-word formula.

Carry the intention into your day

Write down more than names: who supported your education, held the home together in a crisis or quietly cared about your well-being? Thank a living woman for one specific contribution. Where possible, share a responsibility so that gratitude becomes action. Remember departed mothers with a prayer for love and peace rather than tightening the hold of grievance. These are practical ways to carry the video’s intention of gratitude into everyday conduct.

Reflect & understand

Insights and questions for this day

1. Why focus especially on mothers and female ancestors?

Visible family history often records names and property while overlooking nurturing and emotional labour. Day 8 acknowledges that missing contribution. It does not diminish other ancestors; it makes the circle of remembrance more complete.

2. Is this service only for the father’s ancestors?

No. The video acknowledges known and unknown ancestors from both the mother’s and father’s lineages. Married women may include both their birth and marital families. The commitment is to serve according to one’s capacity.

3. What if I do not know an ancestor’s name or have a photograph?

Use the photographs that are available, but do not limit remembrance to them. Include the unknown women through whom the lineage continued. There is no need to force a face to appear or treat an imagined image as a factual identification; a clear intention of respect is the starting point.

4. Must gratitude erase every difficulty in a relationship?

No. Hitesh acknowledges complicated parts of his relationship with his aunt while remembering her maternal contribution. Recognising care does not require approving every action. It is possible to acknowledge both the complexity of a relationship and the love one received.

5. Does honouring sacrifice mean accepting abuse?

Absolutely not. Hitesh explicitly says that he does not promote continuing to endure abuse. Respectfully acknowledging the pain of earlier generations can go hand in hand with supporting women’s safety and dignity today. A tribute must not become an expectation of further suffering.

6. Can today’s gratitude also include living women?

Yes. The video also recognises nurturing received from a wife, sister, teacher and other relationships. Shraddha and tarpan for departed ancestors have their own place; gratitude toward living women can be expressed as thanks, respect and practical support.

7. Is this only meditation, or does it include traditional tarpan?

Traditional preparation and tarpan are part of the service. The video describes the seat, ancestral altar, available photographs, metal ghee lamp, water and black sesame offering. Today’s gratitude and guided meditation accompany that procedure. Consult your family priest for additional customary rites and your shraddha tithi.

8. How can the central lesson become a change in daily life?

Instead of dismissing a woman’s work as merely her duty, acknowledge a specific contribution. Share time and responsibility as well as words of thanks. A prayer for ancestral mothers can then also support greater respect and sensitivity in present-day relationships.

An important note for readers

Traditional shraddha and tarpan are part of this service; consult your family priest about your customary rites. These practices do not replace qualified care for grief, trauma, mental health or addiction-related difficulties. Pause and seek appropriate support if distress increases.
